For the 2014 NEI Effort, we are actively seeking additional data on wildland fire. Cropland burning information is also useful and will be passed along to the groups calculating agricultural emissions. Because we have received a lot of questions about what we are looking for, this page attempts to detail what would be the most useful. However, any and all data are useful. (When in doubt, we’ll take it!)
The official EPA request is located at:
We are particularly seeking data on:
- Prescribed fires and smaller wildfires
- in any format, but please see our Templates (below)
Data should be submitted to fires2014 (at) epa.gov and cc’d to sraffuse (at) sonomatech.com and larkin (at) fs.fed.us.
This template provides the required an optional fields in a format that will be easiest for us to use. The last page of the workbook provides some example data.
Details on Data Request
In particular, we are looking for information on any of the following, each of which is explained further below:
- Fire occurrence (location, date, size)
- Fire type (wildfire, prescribed fire, cropland burning, etc…)
- Fuel moisture
- Observed consumption (duff consumption, etc…)
Information and questions can be sent to Sim Larkin (USFS, larkin (at) fs.fed.us) and Sean Raffuse (STI, sraffuse (at) sonomatech.com) via email, with a cc to Tesh Rao (EPA, ventakesh.rao (at) epa.gov). If the files are too big for email, contact us and we’ll figure out a different solution. For questions, see also our FAQ.
Note: in addition to satellite data, we have access to the following corporate databases – ICS 209 reports (National Wildfires), FACTS (USFS), and NFPORS (DOI). Data pulls from these databases are not needed, but original data that was subsequently submitted to these databases is still useful (in case of transcription errors, etc…). You can also check what datasets we’ve received to date here.
FIRE OCCURRENCE information sought (most critical):
LATITUDE and/or LONGITUDE
DATE / TIME
- The START DAY and (optionally) END DAY of the burn
- The FINAL FIRE SIZE
Where possible the FINAL FIRE PERIMETER (as a Shapefile) is very useful
For prescribed burns, PLANNED FIRE SIZEs are okay, but ACCOMPLISHED FIRE SIZEs are preferred.
- FIRE TYPE
Where available whether the fire is a PRESCRIBED FIRE (RX) or WILDFIRE (WF) or CROPLAND BURN (AG)
FUELS information sought (where available):
- FUEL LOADINGS
FCCS FUELBED NUMBER
FUEL MOISTURE information sought (where available):
- FUEL MOISTURES
Observed FUEL MOISTURES BY SIZE CLASS/FUEL STRATA (10-HR, 1000-HR, DUFF, etc…)
OBSERVED CONSUMPTION information sought (where available):
- OBSERVED CONSUMPTION
Observed TOTAL CONSUMPTION or CONSUMPTION BY FUEL STRATA (CANOPY, DUFF, etc…)
