Fuel loading models and comparisons.

Fuel Loading StepModels to compare

Fuel Characteristic Classification System (FCCS) Fuel Map

The Fire Characteristic Classification System fuel loadings map prepared by Dr. Don McKenzie, US Forest Service FERA Team.  The FCCS fuel loadings map uses Bailey's ecosystem geography, Kuchler's potential natural vegetation, and a current covertype classification (Schmidt et al. 2002) from remote sensing (AVHRR) to identify an FCCS fuelbed for each cell in a 1 km grid for the U.S. CONUS region.

Hardy et al. Fuel Map

The 1-km fuel loadings map for the Western United States developed by Colin Hardy, U.S. Forest Service.  The map is based on the NFDRS fuels map but is designed to reflect the greater fuel loads in the western U.S.

NFDRS Fuel Map

The 1-km National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) fuel loadings map for the continental United States developed by Robert E. Burgan, U.S. Forest Service.

LANDFIRE Fuel Map

The high resolution (30m) fuel loadings map developed for the Landscape Fire and Resource Management Planning Tools Projects (LANDFIRE) LANDFIRE data include layers of vegetation composition and structure, surface and canopy fuel characteristics, and historical fire regimes.  Methodologies for developing the LANDFIRE are science-based and include extensive field-referenced data.
