Analysis Status
The current status of SEMIP.
SEMIP Phase 1
SEMIP Phase 1 is designed to jump start SEMIP by performing a large set of analyses based on the Initial Test Cases identified. However, it is not expected that SEMIP Phase 1 can carry out all of the model-to-observation comparisons identified for the initial test cases, nor an exhaustive list of model-to-model comparisons.
Instead, SEMIP Phase 1 is designed to provide a set of comprehensive analyses that:
- are definitive;
- indicate and quantify where the largest errors in the SEMIP model chain occur;
- identify what observational data are most needed; and
- prioritize which comparisons should be performed next.
See the Analysis overview for a technical description of SEMIP's analysis principles and procedures.
Initial analysis focus
In identifying the initial test cases, a considerable number of potential model-to-observation comparisons were identified. While all of these model-to-observation comparisons are deemed important, the initial focus of the SEMIP analysis is on:
Performing a set of model-to-model comparisons for the test cases.
Specifically, creating and comparing outputs at the following levels:
- Fires Everywhere:
- NEI:
- California Wildfires:
The emphasis is on the Fires Everywhere, NEI, and California cases first, with the goal of letting the results help guide the comparisons for the other test cases.
Collecting the datasets for input to the test cases.
Specifically fire information for Bugaboo and Southeast Rx cases, and meteorological model inputs for all the cases. Fire information is mostly collected for the rest of the cases.
Performing the lowest-hanging model-to-observation comparisons.
Specifically,
- In-situ modeling networks to ground concentrations
- Satellite detected smoke plumes with total column smoke
- Literature studies with emissions factors
- Fire information system fire data to helicopter perimeters and burn scars
Analysis status
To be updated regularly
- The model runs for the Fires Everywhere case are currently being performed.
- Initialization data for the test cases are being gathered.
- The SEMIP Viewer is underway in programming.
- An in depth model-to-observation analysis is underway for the Southern California / Northern California case with the goal of informing how the SEMIP analyses should be performed. A description of results to date is here.
- Community feedback on the initial test cases is being sought through a letter and interview process.
