What do the maps show?

The climatology includes monthly, seasonal, and annual maps of a wide range of characteristics of the Haines Index. The climatology contains the following measures:

  • Average, median, and standard deviation of the Haines Index and the separate A and B components
  • 75th, 90th, 95th, 97th, 99th percentiles of the Haines Index and the separate A and B components
  • Average run length (days) for Index values ≥4, ≥5 or =6
  • Maximum run length (days) of Index values ≥4, ≥5 or =6
  • Average number of 1, 2, 3, … 14-day runs of Index values ≥4, ≥5 or =6
  • Average number of 30-day or greater runs of Index values ≥4, ≥5 or =6
  • Frequency (in percent) of Index values ≥4, ≥5 or =6

Measures of the A or B component alone are shown in terms of degrees (either temperature difference for the A component or temperature minus dew point for the B component) rather than the converted values of 1, 2 and 3. This provides much more information to users trying to understand the context of a specific measurement (see How To Use The Atlas for examples that demonstrate this.)

Only the analysis over the North America land area is shown; values for the neighboring ocean surfaces have been masked. There is also an option to “Overlay Haines Region” on maps. If this box is checked, the map will be blank outside of the region where the selected variant is applicable. For example, when Low variant is selected and Overlay is checked, the map will be blank over the western North America and the Appalachian Mountains .
