List of BlueSky-enabled operational and experimental forecasts and tools, research studies, and more.

Because of its modular nature, easy setup, and configuration BlueSky is being used by numerous groups across the U.S. and around the world.

Applications of BlueSky include decision-support-systems (DSSs), operational and experimental predictions, emissions inventories, fundamental science, and infrastructure development for collaboration between researchers and managers.

Daily Fire Information and Smoke Forecasts

BlueSky is used in a number smoke prediction systems that range from official operational forecasts to decision support tools for specific management applications to experimental forecasts designed to test the limits of smoke prediction.  Several of the experimental smoke model outputs as well as SMARTFIRE fire information are available through an aggregated set of Google Earth layers.

Management Tools

BlueSky has been incorporated in a number of tools for helping with:

  • planning a burn;
  • deciding whether to light a prescribed burn;
  • managing smoke from a fire or set of fires;
  • mitigating smoke impacts through early warning;
  • compiling after-action reports;
  • and more.

Emissions Inventories

 BlueSky has been used to facilitate emissions calculations for a number of emissions inventories for research purposes.  Additionally, BlueSky and SMARTFIRE are now part of the proposed U.S. EPA guidelines for calculating the U.S. National Emissions Inventory.

Basic Research and Analyses

BlueSky is in use at a number of universities and research institutions doing basic research.  These range from fire consumption comparisons to future climate air quality studies.

Collaborative Infrastructures

BlueSky is a collaborative infrastructure - it enables the development and sharing of models in an environment that allows data to be shared quickly and easily.  BlueSky is working with several other collaborative infrastructure projects such as the Smoke and Emissions Model Intercomparison Project and the Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System (IFT DSS).
